Why do all my virtual assistants have default female voices? How does emerging technology embodies and perpetuates existing gender biases, among many other biases, in our society? How can we use speculative as creative tools to incite discussion about complex social issues like such?
Started as a research project with Wenjing about mentrual experience and cyberfeminism, “Does Alexa Dream of Having Period” invites participants to reflect, imagine and cocreate an alternative version of our everyday voice assistant. Together we challenge the narrow assumptions, preconceptions and givens with how such technology is made in our society.
